The hackle does the work, not the angler

A North Country spider carries almost nothing: a body of orange silk and a turn of speckled partridge, and that sparseness is the design rather than an economy. Soft hackle collapses and opens with water pressure alone, so the fly breathes on a dead drift without being moved. The Yorkshire tiers who settled the style meant it for small stone and willow flies and emerging olives, and it does the same job here. Swing it down and across, or fish it upstream on a long leader and watch the line.
