Founded on a mutual love for the outdoors, Tom’s Outdoors began in 2015. Founders Gemma and Chris Russell, who continue to run the business, are on a mission to inspire a life lived outdoors through gear that’s considered, enduring and trustworthy.
Tom’s Outdoors operates from Tumut NSW, where we thrive in the mountains of Kosciuszko National Park and surrounds. The rugged Snowy Mountains region and all the outdoor activities it offers allows us to live and breathe what we sell.
We specialise in premium, built-to-last outdoor clothing and equipment for fly fishing, hiking, camping, paddling, trail running, bike packing, climbing and snowshoeing. We stock a carefully curated range of brands whose philosophies align with our own.
However, our end goal is bigger than selling outdoor gear. We work to encourage families and individuals, younger people and older people and those from near and far to experience the outdoors, especially in our own local region. We are passionate about sharing the beauty of the Snowy Valleys and stories of the interesting, talented and wondrous people of the outdoors.
Chris and Gemma both have Grandfathers with the first name Tom (no, they’re not related!). Both Toms are keen outdoorsmen and as kids, Chris and Gemma spent a lot of time outdoors because of their grandfathers’ influence. Hence, the business is named in tribute to their Grandfathers.
We are dedicated to offering an exceptional outdoor experience centered around the art and joy of fly fishing, catering to both seasoned enthusiasts and beginners. Our skilled guiding team embodies the essence of Tom's Outdoors providing an inclusive, professional and educational guiding experience. Drift the Tumut River, walk and wade Kosciuszko high country streams or fish the Snowy Mountains lakes.

Chris is one half of Tom's Outdoors. He has a huge passion for hiking, skiing, fly fishing, paddling and is a major gear nerd. In between ensuring the business is running smoothly and ordering stock, he is sharing the love of the mountains with Gemma and their two girls.
Gemma is the other half of Tom’s Outdoors. Gemma helps run the store, manages the accounts and ensures the staff are well looked after. Gemma too is very passionate about the outdoors, and with Chris and the girls, spends the weekends hiking, skiing & paddling through our region.
Mickey is our resident fly fishing bum. He is one of the most experienced fly fishing guides in Australia and has been guiding in the region for more than a decade. He has also guided and fished all around the world including in Yellowstone Montana where he learnt to drift down big rivers and catch big fish.
Pat is a passionate photographer and videographer, working with Dean to produce content. His two greatest loves are skiing and fly fishing, and you’ll struggle to find anyone more enthusiastic about the two. Book a guided day with Pat and see for yourself!
When Chloe isn’t aligning our marketing strategy, scheduling social media posts or sending out email campaigns she’ll be off living the Tom’s Philosophy i.e. spending time outside in any way possible whether it’s hiking, biking, paddling, fly fishing or even just enjoying the sun with a good book on hand!
Dean is our in house photographer and film maker. He can always be found with a camera in hand and a film project on the go. As an avid hunter (better than Mickey), hiker and camper, he certainly lives and breathes our beautiful Snowy Mountains.
Brad (B-rad) runs a tight ship to keep orders and stock levels running smoothly. Outside of being a numbers wizard he’s a wickedly good fly fisherman, gold panner, lure builder, drone pilot, fly tyer, guitarist, and more!
Anne heads up our customer service team ensuring no email is left unread. However, the best part of her day is coming home to her big puppies, Buddy and Champ. She has dabbled in overnight hiking however her adventure heart is set on fly fishing and camping.
Noah is a Tumut local who is always ready to pack up his hiking gear and head out on an adventure. When he is not through hiking in the local area Noah is in the store helping our customers choose the right gear for their needs. Noah is always happy to help and never skips his 10:00am banana.
Doods rhymes with woods and that’s where she’ll be when she’s not selling the goods! Doods really does love hiking and camping. When not running her landscape architecture business, her bubbly personality is an asset on the shop floor.
Emma and Vicki are the reason our online orders leave as promptly and beautifully packaged as they do. Fun fact, Vicki is Chris’ Aunty! We ain’t lying when we say we’re a family business.

Monday - Friday: 9am - 5pm
Saturday: 9am - 1pm
Sunday: Closed (gone fishing, kayaking or hiking!)
