WHAT ARE SOME AUSTRALIAN NATIVE SPECIES TO TARGET ON FLY?

Australia's freshwater fly fishing scene is vibrant, offering a range of native species to target. Notable targets include Murray Cod, Australian Bass, Golden Perch (Yellowbelly), Jungle Perch, and Sooty Grunter. Each of these species provides unique challenges and experiences for anglers, from the powerful strikes of Murray Cod in the Murray-Darling Basin to the lively surface action of Australian Bass in coastal rivers. Additionally, the Threadfin Salmon is another exciting option, found in northern freshwater systems and known for its impressive fighting ability.

In saltwater, Australia’s coasts offer equally diverse opportunities. The renowned Barramundi and Giant Trevally are top targets, celebrated for their size and aggressive nature. Queenfish and Permit are also highly sought after, with their challenging behavior and spectacular fights. Other species such as Spanish Mackerel, known for their speed and strength, and Tailor, which provide thrilling surface action, add to the excitement. Flathead and Tuskfish are additional saltwater targets, each offering distinct fishing experiences in Australia's rich marine environments.

WHAT ARE SOME IDEAL NATIVE SETUPS?

When targeting both freshwater and saltwater species in Australia, having a versatile setup is key. Below are recommendations that can work well across different environments:

Rod: A 7 to 9-weight rod is a versatile choice that can handle a wide range of species, from Australian Bass and Jungle Perch in freshwater to Barramundi and smaller saltwater species like Queenfish. For larger and more powerful species like Murray Cod, Giant Trevally, or Permit, consider a 9 to 12-weight rod for the extra power and durability needed to control these fish. A 9-foot rod is the standard length for most situations, offering a good balance between casting distance and control. However, a 10-foot rod can provide added leverage and casting ability, especially in saltwater or when targeting larger fish.

Line: For freshwater species, a floating line is generally preferred, as many of the flies are designed to work on or near the surface. In saltwater, a tropical floating line that can handle high temperatures and cast well in windy conditions is essential. An intermediate or sinking line can be beneficial for deeper waters or when targeting species that stay closer to the bottom, such as Permit or Murray Cod in deeper waterways.

Leader: A 9 foot tapered leader is ideal for most freshwater situations, providing the necessary finesse for species like Australian Bass or Jungle Perch. In saltwater, a shorter, stout leader (6 to 9 feet) is more suitable, particularly when targeting aggressive species where strength is more critical than delicate presentation.

Tippet: A versatile tippet size ranges from 15 to 20lb, which can handle most freshwater species and smaller saltwater species. For larger, more powerful fish like Giant Trevally or Murray Cod, step up to a 30 to 40lb tippet to withstand their strength and the harsh conditions of saltwater environments.
