Fly Fishing Gear | Egg Flies

If you've not experienced the annual spawn run it is truly a sight to be seen, mark it in your calendar!

Towards the end of the trout fishing season, both brown and rainbow trout will migrate up the inflowing rivers of well-known waterways, such as Lake Eucumbene with the intention of spawning. Due to their instinct, these fish are not always hungry and without the correct flies, it's going to be a tough day on the water...

So why not give them what they want?

WHAT IS AN EGG FLY PATTERN?

An egg fly pattern is a type of fishing fly designed to imitate the eggs of spawning fish, such as trout. These patterns are typically small, round, and brightly coloured to resemble fish eggs, which are a significant food source for many fish, especially during the spawning season. Egg flies are highly effective because they mimic the nutrient-rich, readily available food item that fish are instinctively drawn to.

WHEN TO FISH EGG FLY PATTERNS?

Egg fly patterns are most effective during the spawning seasons of various fish species, particularly in late autumn when trout are actively spawning. During these times, fish often congregate in rivers and streams, feeding heavily on the eggs of other fish. Egg flies can also be effective in colder months when natural food sources are scarce, and fish are more opportunistic.

WHAT IS AN IDEAL EGG FLY SETUP?

The ideal setup for fishing egg fly patterns is the same as a good nymphing setup, with a focus on presenting the fly naturally and ensuring it drifts at the right depth where fish are likely feeding.

Rod: A rod suitable for nymphing, typically ranging from 3 to 6 weight, with a length of 9 to 11 feet. A rod with a moderate to fast action is preferred to handle the casting and presentation of egg flies, particularly in varying water conditions.

Line: A weight-forward floating line or a dedicated nymphing line is ideal. This allows for better control of the fly’s drift and helps in detecting subtle strikes, which is crucial when fishing egg patterns.

Leader: Leaders for egg fly fishing should be similar to those used in nymphing, generally 9 to 12 feet long. A tapered leader helps with turnover and ensures a smooth presentation, while maintaining the right depth. For Euro nymphing techniques, a level leader with a fine diameter may be used to maintain sensitivity and control.

Tippet: Tippet sizes for egg fly patterns typically range from 4X to 7X, depending on the size of the egg fly and the target fish. A strong, abrasion-resistant tippet is essential, particularly when fishing in areas with rocks or debris that could damage the line.
