THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A PILLOW FOR CAMPING
When sleeping in the great Australian outdoors, comfort is king, and camping or hiking pillows offer a lightweight, compact, and versatile solution for a comfortable night's rest. Generally, there are two main types of hiking/camping pillows: inflatable and stuff sack pillows.
Type of Pillow: There are several types of camping and hiking pillows, each with unique benefits:
- Inflatable Pillows: These pillows are filled with air, making them highly compressible and ideal for backpacking due to their minimal weight and pack size. You can adjust the firmness by adding or releasing air, and they are generally easy to clean. Some inflatable pillows feature soft fabric exteriors or internal baffles to enhance comfort and prevent them from feeling like a balloon.
- Stuff Sack Pillows: These are a convenient option that doubles as both a pillow and a storage solution. A stuff sack pillow typically involves a compression sack or stuff sack that can be filled with clothing or other soft items to create a pillow. This type of pillow is useful for adding extra comfort while also providing a space-efficient way to carry gear. They are versatile, as you can adjust the firmness by how tightly you pack the sack. This dual-purpose feature can be particularly useful for minimalist or ultralight setups.
Weight and Packability: When selecting a pillow, consider its weight and pack size, especially if you’re backpacking or hiking. Ultralight pillows can be very light and compress down to a small size, making them ideal for long treks. Stuff sack pillows can also be compact when empty but may take up more space when filled with gear. Aim for a pillow that offers a good balance between comfort and packability based on your trip’s needs.
Comfort and Support: The right pillow should provide adequate support for your sleeping style. Side sleepers usually need a thicker, firmer pillow to keep their neck and spine aligned, while back or stomach sleepers may prefer a thinner, softer option. Inflatable pillows often allow for adjustable firmness, which can be tailored to your preference. Stuff sack pillows provide a softer, more cushioned feel but rely on the items used for stuffing, so comfort can vary based on what you pack inside.
Material and Durability: The materials used in your pillow affect its comfort, durability, and weight. Outer fabrics for inflatable pillows are typically nylon or polyester, which are lightweight and durable. Stuff sack pillows usually use durable fabrics like ripstop nylon or polyester that can withstand rough use. Some pillows feature water-resistant or DWR (durable water repellent) coatings, which can help protect against moisture and enhance longevity.
Ease of Cleaning: Consider how easy it will be to clean your pillow, especially on multi-day trips. Inflatable pillows are generally easy to wipe down with a damp cloth, while stuff sack pillows may require spot cleaning or periodic washing. Look for pillows with removable and washable covers if hygiene is a concern.
Noise Levels: Inflatable pillows, particularly those made from nylon, can sometimes produce crinkling or squeaking sounds when you move. Look for inflatable pillows designed with quieter materials or those with fabric covers that help dampen noise. Stuff sack pillows tend to be quieter since they don’t have air chambers that can shift and make noise.
Price and Value: Pillows for camping and hiking come in a range of prices. Consider how often you will use the pillow and in what conditions. Budget-friendly options can be sufficient for occasional use, while more premium models may offer better comfort and durability for frequent campers or hikers. The added functionality of stuff sack pillows, which serve as both a pillow and storage, can provide good value.
