WHAT TO CONSIDER WHEN PURCHASING A HEADLAMP?

Light Output

Light output is measured in lumens which is key to evaluating the brightness of a light source.

Unlike watts, which measure energy consumption, lumens quantify the total amount of visible light emitted. This makes lumens a crucial metric for selecting appropriate lighting solutions for various environments. A higher lumen rating indicates a brighter light, essential for tasks requiring good visibility. Conversely, lower lumens can create a softer, more ambient lighting.

While this is a good indication of how effective the headlamp will be, bear in mind that lumens just measure the brightness of the beam - not the beam distance. Many headlamps will show both the lumens and the beam distance, so it's a good idea to take note of both.

Battery type and runtime

Run time and battery type can differ greatly between brands and models. While a longer run time is generally more desirable, the choice of battery type can depend on individual needs. For instance, rechargeable batteries offer convenience, but you should consider if a single charge will last through each use and whether you can recharge them when necessary. In scenarios like multi-day hikes, where more than one charge might be needed, a headlamp with single-use batteries might be a better option.

Size and weight

When purchasing a headlamp, considering its size and weight is crucial for comfort and practicality. A bulky or heavy headlamp can become uncomfortable during prolonged use, especially for activities like hiking, running, or camping. A lightweight and compact headlamp ensures ease of wear and portability, making it ideal for long treks or dynamic movements. However, it's important to balance size and weight with the necessary brightness and battery life, ensuring the headlamp is powerful enough to meet your needs without becoming a burden.

WHAT IS THE RED LIGHT FEATURE USED FOR ON HEADLAMPS?

  • Preserve night vision: Red light is less likely to disrupt your night vision compared to white light, making it useful for activities like stargazing or navigating in the dark without losing your ability to see in low-light conditions.
  • Flashing red light for emergencies: A flashing red light can serve as a distress signal, helping to attract attention in emergency situations and improving safety during outdoor activities.

HANDY USES FOR A HEADLAMP

  • Fishing: Provides hands-free illumination for tying knots and navigating the waters at night. A headlamp allows anglers to focus on their tasks without needing to hold a flashlight, improving the overall low-light fishing experience.
  • Boating: Essential for night-time navigation and signalling on the water enhancing safety during nocturnal boating activities.
  • Camping: Offers reliable light for setting up tents, cooking, and moving around the campsite after dark. A headlamp frees up your hands, making it easier to perform tasks efficiently. Whether you're pitching a tent, preparing meals, or exploring the area, a headlamp ensures you have ample light without needing to carry a separate flashlight.
  • Running: Enhances visibility and safety during early morning or night time runs. A headlamp allows runners to see the path ahead, avoiding obstacles and hazards. It also makes runners more visible to others, such as drivers or fellow runners, reducing the risk of accidents and improving overall safety.
  • Hiking: Illuminates trails, making it easier to see obstacles and stay on the path in low-light conditions. A headlamp is crucial for hikers, especially on early morning or evening hikes, as it helps them navigate rough terrain, spot trail markers, and avoid tripping over roots or rocks.
  • Home Repairs: Keeps both hands free for tasks in dimly lit areas.
