After rain, when the river lifts and cleans out the gravel

High water moves everything that was sitting in the gravel, and a bright, round profile is one of the few things a trout can pick out in a river running hard and off colour. That is when an egg earns its place as a searching fly rather than a specialist one. Fish it deep with enough weight to hold the bottom, keep the drifts short, and work the softer water at the edges of the main push where fish sit out of the current.
