A clear coat over the wing case does two things. It holds a smooth, hard surface that reflects light in a way a dubbed or feathered back never manages, and it stops the fly falling apart after three fish, which matters on a pattern you will be fishing hard on the bottom. The UV underneath gives it something extra in deeper or cooler water. Fish it deep on the point and expect it to still be worth using at the end of the day.
