Winter at Harveys Hut | Searching For Snow on Tantangara Mountain | Kosciuszko National Park
Can you plan a snowshoeing adventure when there's almost no snow? Well, you can but should you??
Pat Ryan heads into the remote northern reaches of Kosciuszko National Park, setting out from Sawyers Hill with the goal of snowshoeing to Harvey's Hut for an overnight winter camping adventure. With snowshoes strapped to his pack and a promising forecast, the trip quickly becomes a lesson in just how unpredictable the Australian Alps can be.
Instead of deep snow, Pat battles rain, sleet, hail and strong alpine winds as he makes the climb towards Harvey's Hut. Just as it seems winter has arrived, a brief burst of snow falls before disappearing as quickly as it came. After a cold night by the fire in one of Kosciuszko's iconic backcountry huts, the weather transforms overnight.
Day two delivers spectacular blue skies, crystal-clear air and breathtaking views across Northern Kosciuszko National Park. Leaving his overnight pack behind, Pat climbs Mount Tantangara, where panoramic views stretch from Jagungal and the Main Range to Lake Eucumbene—proof that even when the snow doesn't arrive, the Australian High Country never disappoints.
Whether you're planning a winter hike, backcountry camping trip or snowshoe adventure, this film captures the reality of exploring Australia's alpine wilderness: you can't choose the conditions, but every trip is an adventure.
