Tailwaters run cold, clear and heavily fished, and the trout in them inspect a fly properly before eating it. That suits a spider, because there is very little on one to get wrong. The black body keeps it honest and the UV material adds something a fish can pick up that we cannot, which counts for more in the flat light and deep water below a dam wall.
