A small fish that is injured or dying turns pale and flashes its belly as it loses balance, and that is a signal every predator in the river is tuned to. White plays on it directly. The weighted head exaggerates the effect by tipping the fly nose-down and rolling it on the pause. Use it in stirred or deeper water where you need the fly found quickly, and let it drop between strips rather than swimming it steadily.
