The fly that started the hair-wing family

Lee Wulff was losing patience with slim Catskill dries drowning in the fast water of New York's Ausable, so over the winter of 1929 he built something heavier hackled with a bucktail wing and tail that would ride high and keep riding high. He called it the Ausable Gray; Dan Bailey later renamed it. The grey body and hair wing make it a good general dun imitation and a genuinely tough one, so it keeps floating through riffles and rapids where a delicately dressed fly gives up after two casts.
