Barred hackle reads as movement, not colour

Grizzly hackle is barred rather than solid, and that matters more than it sounds: alternating light and dark bands break up the fly's outline and create the impression of something shifting even when the fly is sitting still. Natural prey is mottled for the same reason. It gives you a fly that looks alive on the pause, which is when most takes happen. Worth carrying alongside the black version for clear water where a solid colour looks too uniform.
