A muddler does not have to stay on top. Sunk on a sink tip and stripped, the deer hair head pushes water down there instead of on the surface, and the black dressing gives an outline that holds up in coloured water and low light where the natural version disappears. That makes this the version to reach for when nothing is looking up. Strip it with pauses and let the buoyant head lift the fly between pulls, which is usually when it gets taken.
