Fulling Mill Mallard & Claret Fly

A wing, where the rest of the team has hackle

Most flies on a loch cast are palmered or hackled, and putting one winged pattern among them gives a fish a different shape to look at. That is the case for carrying this: a slim bronze mallard wing over a claret body reads as a drowned dun or a small dark fish depending on depth and speed. It suits the point or middle of a three fly team rather than the bob, and it swings well in a river too. Old, and none the worse for it.
