Damsel nymphs are big compared with most of what a trout eats sub-surface, and when they are ready to hatch they swim horizontally for the margins in the top few feet of water, which puts them in plain view of every fish in the lake. A slow hand-twist with the occasional sharp twitch of the rod tip matches how they move, abdomen undulating side to side. The hot head gives you a point of reference to watch, so you see the take rather than feel it.
