The bob fly, and the reason a three fly cast works

On a loch-style team the top dropper is not fished deep, it is tripped along in the surface where a hackled fly makes a disturbance the other two cannot. That is this fly's job. The black body with a red band matches the hawthorn and heather flies it is named for, both of which blow onto the water in numbers and carry exactly that colouring. Work it through the wave on the high country lakes from Eucumbene to Khancoban, dibbling it before you lift off.
