The curved hook is not decoration. It gives the fly the humped, segmented shape of a scud or a free-living caddis grub, which is what makes up much of what a trout finds among stones on the bottom. Weight built into the body rather than a bead gets it down without a bright head. It is durable enough to keep fishing after a dozen fish, and it is the pattern that pushed tight-line nymphing into the mainstream.
