A bloodworm is the larval stage of the midge, and it is red because it carries haemoglobin, which lets it live in the airless silt at the bottom of a lake. That is where trout find them, grubbing in the mud rather than picking them out of mid-water. Fish it accordingly: deep, static or barely moving, on the point under an indicator with the fly close to the bottom. Different job entirely to a pupa pattern fished on the ascent.
