Position matters as much as colour. A strip of red laid along the top of the fly rather than at the head shows itself as the nymph tumbles and rolls in the current, which is exactly the moment a trout below decides whether to move. Under a clear coat it stays bright rather than dulling with use. Fish it dead drift close to the bottom, and use it when a plain pheasant tail is being watched and refused.
