Kelly Galloup built this on Montana's Madison and wrote the book on fishing it, and the rigging matters as much as the fly. Use a short section of heavy tippet, around four feet of 15 to 20 pound, on a sinking line or sink tip: a long light leader lets the fly wander and kills the action. Then slap it in against banks and rip it back, or work it across and down through a run. The spun head throbs on every pull. Black is the version for stained water and the low light at either end of the day.
