Some days the river is down, the water is glassy and a bright egg does nothing but empty the pool. Watermelon is the option for exactly that: pale enough not to alarm a fish holding in thin water, but still carrying the shape and drift of the real thing. Fish it on light tippet with as little weight as you can get away with, and let it move at the pace of the current. It also works well as the second fly behind something brighter, for fish that come to look but will not commit.
