Getting the drift right matters more than the colour

An egg only works if it behaves like an egg, which means drag-free and close to the bottom. Weight the rig so the fly rides just above the gravel and starts to tick it through the last third of the drift, and keep drifts short rather than long, because a long one nearly always ends in drag. This softer watermelon body suits the back half of the run and clearer water, when the loud colours have stopped working.
