Polaroiding a lake edge or a shallow flat means putting a fly in front of a fish you have already spotted, and that calls for something that will not spook it on entry. Olive lands quieter to a trout's eye than white or black, and reads as part of the weed and gravel it is swimming over. Lead the fish, let the fly sink to its level, and move it just enough to be noticed. Watch the fish rather than the fly.
