Trout hunting a small fish go for the head to disable it, which is why a streamer with a defined head and visible eyes gets hit cleanly rather than nipped. The skull head does that job and carries the weight at the front, so the fly dives on the pause and swims nose-down like something in trouble. Natural is the honest option, close to the colour of a small trout or galaxiid. Fish it on an intermediate line with a mix of speeds until you find what they want.
