A tungsten bead on a jig hook does two things at once: it drops the fly fast and it flips the hook point up, so the fly can be worked along gravel without collecting the bottom. What most people miss is the knot. A small loop knot lets the fly pivot freely on the drop, which is where the jigging action comes from and where most of the takes happen.
