Early season water is often cold and carrying colour, and that is when a dark nymph outfishes a bright one: a black body holds a hard, definite outline where a pale fly turns to a smudge. The tungsten bead gets it down fast enough to matter in the higher flows that come with it. Barbless, so it comes out cleanly on the fish you release. A good point fly through winter and early spring, and worth keeping on when the river is up after rain.
