Bright orange, for cold water and flat light

Bright orange is the loudest of the natural egg shades and the easiest for a fish to pick up when the water is cold, carrying colour, or the light has gone flat. That makes it an autumn and winter fly more than a summer one. Drift it under an indicator along gravel runs and drop-offs, or hang it below a heavier nymph so it tracks just off the bottom. Tied small so it reads as a single loose egg rather than a cluster, which is usually what a wary fish will commit to.
