The Adams works because it is a mixture rather than a match. Grizzle and brown hackle wound together give a mottled grey-brown that is not any particular insect, and that is precisely why it passes for so many of them. It has been the first fly out of the box for generations of anglers for that reason. The parachute hackle keeps it buoyant enough to hang a small nymph underneath if you want a dry-dropper.
