Most dry flies float on hackle, and hackle wets out, which is why a fly that rode beautifully at nine in the morning is sitting wrong by lunchtime. Putting the foam in the abdomen changes that: the buoyancy is built into the fly rather than dressed onto it, so it sits the same way all day and will hold a nymph underneath without settling. Yellow keeps it visible in low light.
