3-Day Snowshoe Expedition in Remote Kosciuszko Wilderness | Stormy Alpine Trails & Mountain Huts
Pat and Chris take on a 3-day winter traverse through the stormy snow-covered backcountry of Kosciuszko National Park, visiting three remote alpine huts: Bradley and O’Briens, Round Mountain, and Linesmans Hut — all rebuilt after the 2020 bushfires. Starting at Cabramurra and descending the steep winding roads to Tumut Ponds then back up again, climbing up into the stormy snowline. Thunder, lightning, wind gusts over 70km/h, and freezing rain — not exactly ideal camping conditions. Traversing plowed roads left by recent search and rescue missions, navigating through whiteouts on exposed ridgelines, and finding warmth and relief in huts built by dedicated volunteers and park staff. Whether you're into backcountry adventures, alpine huts, or just want to see Kosciuszko in its wild winter form, this is one you won’t want to miss.
A slightly frantic pitch before a huge storm hit Bradleys and O'briens Hut.

It's always leg day on snowshoes... plus around 15kg of ultralight alpine gear on the back.

Scenic Round Mountain hut. Our furthest point and long way from civilisation, particularly in winter.

Whiteout conditions and a rush to get tents up before lighting the fire and settling in to Linesmans Hut for the evening.

All smiles days three with 15km to the car and the allure of Cabramurra bistro on the mind.
