It was named by the fish that nearly got away

The name came from a client of the designer's, hooked up on this fly for the first time and watching the fish head straight for a log. She called it a code red situation, and the name stuck. That is the sort of fish it tends to find. A dark nymph carrying a deliberate point of red, which is a colour trout respond to for reasons nobody has satisfactorily explained but which nobody who fishes seriously ignores.
