The maker's case for it is short and hard to argue with: more often than not, something small and black will fool the wariest trout in gin-clear water. There is no hatch to match and no clever theory, just a small dark shape that reads as edible and gives nothing away. Get it in front of a fish with a decent drift and the odds are good. Presentation does more of the work here than the pattern does.
