Lake Eucumbene Trophy Trout Fly Fishing Trip | Catch, Cook and Camp

Lake Eucumbene Trophy Trout Fly Fishing Trip | Catch, Cook and Camp

Join Pat Ryan for three days of fly fishing on Eucumbene Dam, chasing big trout, battling unpredictable mountain weather and putting his campfire culinary skills to the test.

The trip gets off to a wild start, with strong winds making conditions on the lake challenging and forcing Pat to rethink how far he ventures from the boat ramp in his 3.5m tinny. But the gamble pays off, with a seriously impressive brown trout coming to the net.

With a fresh trout on ice, Pat heads back to camp to try his hand at filleting. From attempting to butterfly a trout for the first time to cooking it over the fire, the first night delivers one of the best camp meals he's had. The following evening, things get taken a step further with crispy trout burgers and deep-fried fish cocktail bites.

Day two brings more great fishing, with foam lines, wind-blown banks and streamer fishing producing some incredible fish. But by the final day, the weather has completely changed. Blue skies, barely a breath of wind and a glassy Eucumbene Dam make for perfect conditions — unfortunately, the trout didn't get the memo.

That's lake fishing. One day you can crack the code and find some incredible fish, and the next you can be completely humbled. And that's exactly what keeps Pat coming back.

Three days of winter fly fishing, big trout, unpredictable weather, camp cooking and plenty of laughs on Lake Eucumbene.
