Sometimes the best adventures are right at your doorstep.
This local micro-adventure started right at Tom’s Outdoors in the middle of Tumut where Chris set off on foot for a simple overnight hike. No long drive, no remote trailhead, no peak fever, just the next 24 hours on foot in our hometown.
The route heads out of Tumut and climbs into Wereboldera State Conservation Area, following the ridgelines above Tumut to camp for the night with views across the valley. After watching the last light disappear over town, we woke to something pretty special, a thick blanket of fog filling the valley below, with the surrounding hilltops poking through like islands.
From camp, the walk continues along the ridge to the trig before descending back towards town and finishing beside the Tumut River, eventually arriving right back where it started at the shop.
More than anything, this little overnight trip is a reminder that an adventure doesn’t always have to involve travelling hours from home or chasing somewhere you’ve seen on Instagram. Sometimes it’s worth looking at the bush, trails and landscapes in your own backyard and seeing what you can piece together.
