Long Plain Hut in Kosciuszko National Park | Explore With Tom's

Some areas are best explored slowly and by human power, i.e. walking. Having driven down Long Plain Road numerous times before, a new perspective is given when taking the same route by foot. What lies down Long Plain Road is most commonly enjoyed in the warmer months via vehicle. The area is generally closed to vehicles from June long weekend to October weekend during winter. However, we would argue that as soon as the gates are locked, a whole new world of adventure opens up.

When on foot you have time to stare into the snow-covered hills in the distance, gaze into the heavy flowing Murrumbidgee, spot the kangaroos peeking through the grass and listen to the call of the yellow-tailed black cockatoo. Long Plain Hut is about 4km from the Long Plain road turn-off. Add a couple of extra hundred metres if you want to detour to where the Port Phillip fire trail crosses the Murrumbidgee.

The campground at Long Plain Hut is usually a hive of activity. Day trippers, horse riders, campers, hikers, bikers and other explorers alike use the area as a base for their Snowy Mountains ventures. But in winter, it becomes a remote solitude only a few kilometres from the highway and just over an hour's drive from Tumut. Long Plain Hut ticks all the boxes for a quick nature reset.

Our 'Explore with Tom's' series is a permission slip to make yourself a cup of tea, curl up somewhere comfortable and tune out while tuning in to nature. Escape from the hustle and bustle of our modern day lives and immerse yourself in the natural world's quietude.
