Hackle, a bright head and a body that sparkles

Three things make a traditional wet fly work and this has all of them in balance: soft hackle for movement, a hot head to draw the eye and a sparkle body that catches what light there is. That combination is why it has stayed in boxes long after most flies of its era dropped out. It sits well on the middle or top dropper of a three fly cast, and swings or dead drifts equally happily. Given the name, catch and release is the right approach.
