Seal's fur is prized for reasons that all show up underwater. The fibres are coarse and spiky, so they stand out from the body and suggest legs and gills rather than lying flat. The material is translucent, so light passes through it the way it does through a real insect. And it holds tiny air bubbles among the fibres, which is what gives a wet fly that glinting, alive look. Black covers most of the small dark things trout eat.
