Summiting Australia's Three Highest Peaks | Main Range Loop Hike to Kosciuszko, Townsend & Twynam

Summiting Australia's Three Highest Peaks | Main Range Loop Hike to Kosciuszko, Townsend & Twynam

Join us for a two day alpine hiking adventure across the Kosciuszko Main Range, summiting the three highest mountains in Australia — Mount Kosciuszko, Mount Townsend, and Mount Twynam — deep in Kosciuszko National Park.
After waiting for a weather window over Christmas, my father-in-law John, who lives in the Lake District, and I loaded up lightweight packs and set out to complete the iconic Main Range Loop. Instead of rushing it as a single long day, we took our time, camping high on the range and soaking in everything this unique alpine landscape has to offer.
Our route included the summit of Mount Twynam, Australia’s third highest mountain, before traversing past rugged ridgelines and glacial terrain toward camp at Wilkinson’s Creek. The following morning we scrambled to the top of Mount Townsend, Australia’s second highest peak, where sweeping views opened over the Geehi and Murray catchments. Finally, we topped out on  Mount Kosciuszko, taking in the vast alpine plateau with views all the way to Bogong in Victoria, and the unmistakable granite tors scattered across the range.

Along the way we passed Rawson Pass, Australia’s highest toilet, crossed the headwaters of the Snowy River, and descended via Charlotte Pass before finishing the trip with a night at Geehi Flats — a place I’ve been visiting since childhood.
Even in mid-January there were lingering snow patches, strong winds rolling cloud across the plateau, and alpine wildflowers in full bloom. The glacial valleys and open ridgelines felt uniquely Australian yet strikingly similar to the English fells John calls home. With upgraded boardwalks protecting the fragile alpine environment and changing mountain weather reminding us who’s in charge, this trip was a powerful reminder that the Australian Alps demand preparation and respect.
If you’re planning a Kosciuszko summit hike, tackling the Main Range Loop, or looking for a realistic look at multi-day alpine camping in NSW, this adventure shows exactly what to expect from an unforgettable few days on Australia’s highest peaks.
